APPERSON ELEMENTARY'S GREENING PROJECT

We are feeling thankful for the success of the first phase of Apperson Elementary's land stewardship project, a collaborative initiative that involved Apperson's amazing administrators, PTA, teachers, families, community volunteers, Council District 7, and ST Forward. We are also grateful for all the neighbors who donated funds to purchase over 100 California native plants, and for the businesses (Paramount Nursery, Do It Center, Harbor Freight, Back Door Bakery) that donated plants, tools, materials and yummy treats for the volunteers.

We were able to tackle 12 different zones for cleanup and planting. Our focus was to bring in CA native plants that are local to our area. We are incredibly thankful to Cassy Aoyagi of Form LA for her guidance in plant selection and landscape design. We are also thankful to Roger Klemm for his expertise and for the planting demonstration he shared with all the volunteers. We are especially grateful to all the wonderful volunteers who worked together to clean, and to welcome these California native plants into the school community. Students and teachers will be organizing to tend to the various zones so they can be watered and cared for while the plants get established. The project will also include resources the teachers can utilize to connect this land stewardship to their science curriculum. Thank you, Apperson! This collaboration has been truly special!
